Of all the many different fishing techniques, surface fishing with lures is by far the most exciting method when it comes to catching chub. Chub love surface and shallow running lures, like the ones Rapala, Salmo and Savage Gear produce. Although you can catch chub off the top all year round it's the warmer months that offer the more consistent surface fishing, try it with something like a Rapala ULC3 lure or a Salmo tiny wobbler.
Catching chub off the top is the perfect way to fish in the summer months, but knowing where to start is key to catching your first Chub on a lure.
Our favourite chub lures include:
The Heddon tiny crazy crawler
The Rapala ULC3
Rapala BX Brat
Rapala Ultralight pop
Savage Gear Goby crank.
Be very careful and quiet when approaching your swim. Chub are very cautious and fearful fish, they will spook at the slightest noise, and it could take hours for them to come back.
Some people say chub have an eye in every scale so can see You long before You can see him, some say its the wariest of fish. Trees and grass hanging above the water – are my favourite spots for surface fishing. Chub wait in there for falling down insects. It's like a natural fast food restaurant for them. So why not try our luck in those places. But remember to be as quiet as possible, a small lure cast upstream and then brought back into the zone works wonders.
It Is always worth to try in places where water is running a bit quicker, and on the river bed are some natural rocks, roots and weeds. Water in these swims are usually a bit colder and richer in oxygen – chub love that, and its food does too.
What time of the day is the best for chub surface fishing? I would say very early morning and a couple of hours before dusk when You can see lots of insect flying above the water
